The winter in Cleveland is always to long and the summer in Cleveland is always to short. Summer hopefully will be here soon. So what do people in Cleveland need to do to prevent any potential problems with their foot and ankle.

When the sun finally comes put in Cleveland, we try to get as much as possible. We head down to Mentor Headlands or we go to Edgewater park in Cleveland and sit out in the sun. Obvious things we need to be careful about is using sun screen on our whole body including our feet. Even though the incidence of skin cancer on the foot is very low, we still need to protect them. Malignant Melanoma is rare but can occur on the foot. In fact reggae legend, Bob Marley, died of Malignant Melanoma on his hallux/big toe. If you do have a lesion, make sure you look at the ABC's of melanoma. A=Assimetry, B=Borders, and C= Color if any of these changes, you should have it looked at immediately. So prevention is important, using an SPF 50 or higher is key. Another that I tell my patients is that, if you have had surgery you either need to keep your healed incision covered or use a very high SPF sunblock. Whether you are caucasian or african-american, this is new skin with fresh melanocytes. These cells are very senstive to light, so if the incision is not protected it can become permantely discolored.

Cleveland beaches are very rocky. So I always suggest that you wear water shoes. This offers some protection if you step on something and also gives you a lot of support. Even though Cleveland is not tropical, the sun on a black surface can be very hot. If you are a diabetic, you should never go barefoot anywhere, especially in the summer on the beach.
