• 6 Things to Consider When Buying Running Shoes

Running is a wonderful activity. It is great for your overall health and wellbeing. Sometimes it can be tough on your feet. As such it is important to select running shoes that will protect your feet as you run. Here are 6 things to consider when buying running shoes to save you from foot pain, bunions and more!

  1. Fit – Be sure to try on running shoes with the socks you will be running in. You should also try them on with any orthotic device you use while running. If you do not have an orthotic but a different type of insert, bring that with you as well. The closer you get to an actual scenario of fit, the better. Also, try on shoes at the end of the day. The feet swell during the day due to their use and are their biggest at the end of the day. Select a pair of shoes that fit comfortably with your feet swollen from the day’s activities.
  2. Shoe Mechanics – There should never be a break-in period for shoes. If they aren’t comfortable right off the bat put them back. Be sure there is plenty of cushioning in the shoes you are trying on. Also try on many different pairs of shoes. Do not settle on a pair after only trying on two.
  3. Body Weight – The more you weigh the more pressure if put on your feet when you run. Heavier runners should select a pair of shoes with more shock absorption to help prevent problems such as shin splints in the future.
  4. Life of the Shoe – Most running shoes should last between 300-500 miles. If you run 25 miles a week be sure to swap out your shoes for a new pair at least every three to four months.
  5. Price – The most expensive shoe is not always the best. Also, do not always go for the cheapest shoe. Try to buy a shoe that is somewhere in the middle. Expect to pay $65.00-$85.00 for a pair of shoes.
  6. Care for your Shoes – Are the shoes you are buying easy to clean? Do the insoles come out easily? Can you use water to wash them without ruining them? Make sure to select shoes that are easy to clean and convenient to your needs.
